Hopkinsville clobbered Hopkins County Central 54-0 Thursday night in Morton’s Gap. While at first glance it appeared it was a big night for the offense, it was a second straight standout effort from the defense that propelled the Tigers to the win.
Thanks to a defense that continually held the Storm in check and caused the offense to play on a short field, none of Hopkinsville’s offensive touchdowns went for more than 16 yards.
A week after throwing six interceptions in a loss to Trigg County, the Storm had four more against the Tigers.
Mitchell Degenhardt had touchdown runs of 10 and six yards and added a 20-yard interception return for a score in the second half for the Tigers. Degenhardt was one of five Tiger runners to reach the end zone, joining JaKevis Bryant (7-yard run), Jevon Leavell (16-yard run), Jay Bland (1-yard run), and Jordan Hopson (14-yard run).
Bland also found Gavin Marschand for a nine-yard scoring pass right before halftime, the fifth time the duo have hooked up on a scoring play.
The 54-point win was the largest for Hoptown since beating Warren East 54-0 in the first round of the playoffs last year. The teams will meet again in the first round in two weeks in Bowling Green.
Hoptown (3-6) closes out their regular season at home next Friday against Greenwood.
