VIDEO – Stevens Still Alive at State Wrestling Tourney

2-16-stevens

Trigg County’s Colin Stevens won his first two matches Friday at the State Wrestling Tournament before losing to the top-ranked wrestler.

The seventh-ranked Stevens opened with a pair of pins in the 160-pound class over Tatum Campbell of Montgomery County and No. 15 Mason Hall of South Oldham. In the quarterfinals, Stevens ran into top-ranked Derrick Smallwood of North Oldham. Smallwood beat Stevens 18-5, which was only the third time in Smallwood’s 52 wins this year that his opponent went the distance. Stevens will now await the winner of No. 12 Cody Foster of Ryle and No. 9 Jack Fuller of Apollo in the consolation bracket.

In the 126-pound class, freshman Ethan Futrell came into the tournament ranked No. 13 in the class. He lost his opener to No. 12 Landon Lenhart of Trinity by fall. He rebounded with a pin of Jordan Wells of South Oldham in the wrestle-backs but was eliminated by No. 18 Truman Galusha of Scott County.

St. Xavier and defending state champion Union County are tied for first place with 108 points. Christian County is seventh with 64.5 points. Caldwell County is 26th with 27 points, followed by Hopkinsville in 45th place (13); Trigg County in 48th place (11); and Fort Campbell in 56th place (8).
