Wrestling is a family affair for the Stevens family, and Trigg County sophomore Colin Stevens has now added his accomplishments to the family mantle. Stevens captured third place in the 160-pound class at the KHSAA State Wrestling Tournament Saturday in Lexington, becoming the fourth member of his family to finish in the top three.

Stevens dropped to the consolation bracket Friday after falling to eventual state champion Derrick Smallwood of John Hardin in the quarterfinals.

He opened Saturday with a pin of Apollo’s Jack Fuller in the third period. In the consolation quarterfinals, Stevens faced off against No. 6 Tristan Garcia of Male. After trailing for most of the match, Stevens rallied for five points in the final period to claim an 8-7 win, getting the winning points in the final five seconds.

Stevens scored five points in the third period to beat No. 5 Clayton Boyd of Conner 5-2 to advance to the third place match where he knocked off No. 3 Max Powell of Fairdale 6-4 to claim third place.

Colin’s father Ralph won a state title in 1982. His brother Aaron finished third in 2014 and his uncle Homer finished third in both 1980 and 1981.

Colin finishes his sophomore season with a record of 49-6. He entered the weekend ranked No. 7 in the 160-pound class with five of the six wrestlers ahead of him slated to graduate this year.
