2-1-slayton

Helped by a pair of podium visits, Caldwell County finished 19th at the KHSAA State Wrestling Championships Saturday – their first top 20 finish since 2001.

Dylan Gray won the 182-pound division, knocking off Christian County’s Diion Leavell 8-4 in the title match. He became the eighth Tiger wrestler to win a state title and the first since his father Wes took home first place in 1995. Wes was on the sidelines helping coach his son to the title Saturday.

Dylan Walls finished seventh in the 106-pound class, beating North Hardin’s Devon Herron in his final match.

Seth Slayton advanced to the fourth consolation round with a 12-3 major decision over Oldham County’s Damien Calderon. His day ended in the fourth round with a loss to No. 8 Wyatt Andreoni of Woodford County, who went on to finish fourth.

Caldwell County’s 49 points at the state tourney were their most since 2002 with their 19th place finish their best since 2001.
