Lady Wildcats Split Doubleheader With Murray High

The Trigg County Lady Wildcats claimed a 7-4 victory over Murray High in the first game of a softball doubleheader at the Recreation Complex in Cadiz, before surrendering 2 runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to fall 8-7 in the nightcap.  The Lady Tigers played as the home team in the second game because it was originally scheduled to be played in Murray.  The Lady Wildcats have a nine-game win streak snapped to stand at 14-7, while Murray moves to 6-16 on the year.

In the first game, Trigg took an early lead through an RBI single by junior Maggie Snodgrass.  The score held until the top of the third when the Lady Tigers scored twice to take a 2-1 lead.  The Lady Wildcats responded in the bottom of the inning to move back in front at 3-2 on a 2-run homerun by junior Hannah Colbert.

A double in the bottom of the fifth by junior Julia Rhone scored freshman Adri Phillips, with sophomore Isabella Alexander coming home on the throw.  Murray answered with 2 runs in the top of the sixth to cut the lead to 1 at 5-4.  Once again, the Lady Wildcats had the answer with 2 runs in the bottom of the inning for the final 7-4 score.

Colbert earned the win, going the distance and allowing 4 runs, 3 earned, on five hits with seven strikeouts and a couple of walks.  Colbert finished 3-4 at the plate, knocking-in 3 and scoring 3 times.  Rhone had a hit and 2 RBI, with Snodgrass and junior Madison Simpson both collecting two hits and driving-in a run.  Freshman Phelan Dossett was 4-4, and Phillips and 7th grader Alyssa Southwood both had a hit.

Freshman Livy Bogard took the loss, working 6.0 innings and giving up 7 runs on fifteen hits.  Freshman Emily Dawson and seniors Paige Miller and Alexis Burpo each had a hit and an RBI.

Trigg County jumped out to another early lead in the second game, posting 4 runs in the top of the second.  Rhone and Dossett both hit RBI doubles in the frame, each knocking-in 2 runs.

After getting a run in the bottom of the second, Murray struck again in the fourth, scoring twice to cut the lead to 1 at 4-3.  The Lady Wildcats stretched the lead to 7-3 in their half of the sixth on the strength of an RBI single by sophomore Makenzi Ellis and an inside-the-park homerun by Kara Southwood.

Murray once again cut the lead to 1 in the sixth, taking advantage of a 2-run error by the Lady Wildcats.  Trigg went quietly in the top of the seventh, leaving the door open for the Lady Tigers.  After an RBI single tied the game, another costly Trigg error allowed in the winning run.

Colbert took the loss, surrendering 8 runs, 5 earned, on eight hits with twelve strikeouts and four walks over 6.2 innings.  Rhone and Dossett had a hit and 2 RBI each, followed by Southwood, Ellis, and sophomore Abby Terrell with a hit and an RBI each.  Junior Autumn Durham collected two hits, and Phillips had one.

Bogard bounced-back to earn the win for Murray, working 7.0 innings while allowing 7 runs, 4 earned, on eight hits with four walks.  Burpo and sophomore Calli Carver each had 3 RBI for the Lady Tigers.

Up next for the Lady Wildcats is a 5th District match-up with Crittenden County on Monday.
