We have asked many senior athletes this year about their college plans after high school. Answers have ranged from physical therapy to agriculture to the legal field to science and engineering.

For Christian County senior Harley Schamp, a member of the Bassin’ Colonels fishing team, she will be going to school to learn how to build NASCAR racing engines.

Harley has been a racing fan for years. More so, a fan of Dale Earnhardt Jr. After hearing a presentation at school, she decided she wanted to learn how to build engines.

She will be attending Mopar Tec in Mooresville, North Carolina, which is an elective offered through NASCAR Tech and the Universal Technical Institute. She is hoping to learn the technology, aerodynamics, and pit crew skills used by automotive technicians and racing teams.

Harley has overcome medical issues that has limited her time on the lakes with the Bassin’ Colonels. She finished 31st at the Region I Tournament this year and caught the team’s biggest bass at 4-pounds, 11-ounces.

Given the challenges Harley has successfully overcome in the past few years, don’t be surprised if a racecar whose engine that she helped build isn’t sitting in victory lane before long.
