Football night was back in the Bluegrass as the Kentucky Wildcats played host to the Vanderbilt Commodores on Saturday night. Coming out of their bye week, and more importantly off an overtime loss at Texas A&M, the Wildcats pulled away late to defeat the Commodores, 14-7.

While the Commodores struck first with an early touchdown in the first quarter, it didn’t take long for Terry Wilson to connect with Lynn Bowden for a five yard score to tie the game.

However, aside from that single play, Kentucky was atrocious on offense for three quarters.

In the fourth quarter, though, Benny Snell Jr. finally returned the favor. Snell took matters into his own hands, carrying the rock nine times for 75 yards for a TD on the go-ahead drive.

Vanderbilt did have one last shot to tie the game before Josh Allen strip-sacked QB Kyle Shurmur while Mike Edwards recovered the ball to ice the decision.

Kentucky’s fourth-ranked scoring defense did more than their part, holding Vanderbilt to seven points despite being on the field for more than 28 minutes.

Leading the defense was the stellar trio of Allen, Edwards and Kash Daniel. Daniel led the team in tackles with 11 and a forced fumble, while Edwards recorded nine tackles with a pass breakup. Allen, though, totaled eight tackles and two sacks with both a pass break up and a forced fumble.

Snell finished the contest with 32 carries for 169 yards, notching his 16th game in school history with 100 or more yards rushing.

Wilson, on the other hand, finished with just 18 yards passing by completing only 3-9 pass attempts. Though the weather played as a factor for both teams, don’t be surprised if a change is made under center.

The Wildcats (6-1) will travel to the Missouri Tigers (4-3) next Saturday for a 4 PM EDT kickoff.
