Madisen Ireland scored a career-high six goals for Trigg County in their win over Mayfield Thursday

The Trigg County Wildcats boys’ and girls’ soccer teams both picked up wins at the Recreation Complex on Thursday night.  The Lady Wildcats enjoyed the easier of the contests, mercy ruling the Lady Cardinals 10-0 late in the 2nd half.  The Wildcat boys turned in a strong defensive effort, not allowing a shot on goal in a 2-0 win.

Lady Wildcat senior forward Madisen Ireland had a huge night, scoring 6 goals and causing problems for the Lady Cardinal defense from the right side of the Trigg (7-3-1) attack.  Sophomore midfielder Emily Noffsinger, senior midfielder Tiffany Shafer, and junior midfielder Brittany Kelly had a goal each for the Lady Wildcats, while Shafer and senior defender Grace Sink each had an assist.  The shutout is Trigg junior goakeeper Julia Rhone’s second straight and third of the season, and the team’s second mercy rule win of the season.

The Trigg boys found their shutout more difficult to come by, but got a stellar effort from the defense.  Seniors Carter Boyd, Max Sauermann, and Jacob Kesty, along with juniors Derek Frazier and Daniel Martin, and freshman Ben Futrell kept the Cardinals in check, not allowing a shot on goal.  Senior midfielder Javier Llarena got the Wildcats on top in the first half, converting a penalty kick after freshman Will Jolly was fouled in the box.  Jolly would put the game away with inside of 15 minutes remaining, when he cut across the Cardinal defense and rifled a 15 yard shot into the top far corner of the goal.  Sophomore Matthew Smith recorded the shutout in goal for the Wildcats.

The Lady Wildcats, ranked 7th in the YourSportsEdge.com 2nd Region rankings, travel to Dixon to face the 9th ranked Webster County Lady Trojans on Tuesday, looking to extend their 8 game unbeaten streak.  The Trigg boys, ranked 9th, move to 5-6 on the year and head into a big match on Monday with district rival, 5th ranked Lyon County (7-3).
