The Todd County Central Rebels are headed back to the playoffs, after missing them in 2016, after knocking off Butler County 28-16 Thursday night in Bowling Green. The game was played at Warren East High School due to grub worms, moles, and skunks damaging Butler County’s home field.

Neither team got much going early in the contest, as the 1st quarter ended at 0-0. Butler County had trouble holding onto the ball, turning it over twice in the opening stanza.

The Bears finally got on the board first midway through the second quarter on a 65-yard touchdown pass that put Butler County up 8-0. Less than two minutes later, Isaiah Fingers scored on a touchdown run to even things up at 8-8. Late in the first half, Finger scored again, this time from 21-yards out to give the Rebels a 14-8 lead at the break.

Less than a minute into the second half Jaquavion Mimms broke off a long touchdown run to extend Todd County’s lead to 22-8. Before you could blink, Fingers returned an interception 70-yards, and the Rebels led 28-8.

Butler County tried to rally back into the game, getting back into the end zone with nearly six minutes left in the 3rd quarter to trim the lead to 28-16. The defenses then clamped down on both sides, as neither team could score the rest of the way out.

It was a big defensive performance for Asa Young, who ended up with four interceptions on the night.

The win improves the Rebels to 6-3 on the season and 1-3 in district play. The win also placed the Rebels in the Class 2A playoffs. Their prize for their first playoff berth since 2010, a trip to Mayfield to take on the Cardinals.

Todd County will close out the season next Friday on the road at Logan County.
