Caldwell County Tops Hoptown to Reach Region Title Match

Caldwell County took the next step Wednesday in trying to win their first region volleyball title in six years with a straight set win over Hopkinsville in the semifinals of the Second Region Tournament at Cadiz. Caldwell won 25-14, 25-14, 25-12 to advance to their fifth region title match in eight years.

It was Hoptown that had the hot hand early, scoring the first five points of the first set. But Caldwell answered with a 12-1 run and never allowed Hoptown to get closer than five points the rest of the way.

Caldwell led wire-to-wire in the second set, jumping out to a 6-1 lead and later using a 6-0 run to take control and win 25-14.

In the third set, Hoptown hung around and forged a 7-7 tie. Caldwell then ran off eight straight points to lead 15-7 and never allowed Hopkinsville to get closer than six points the rest of the way.

Region player of the year Carlie Peek had another standout performance with 18 kills and two blocks. Freshman Olivia Mitchell added seven kills and seven digs, while Savanna Tays had 20 assists, six digs, and five aces.

Hopkinsville, who won their first region match in 13 years Tuesday, finishes their season with a record of 21-18 and is slated to graduate two starters and a top reserve.

Karalyn Beymer had five kills and a block, while Sarah Cavanah added four kills and nine assists.  Savannah Peck had six assists as well.

Caldwell County (27-9) will play Henderson County Thursday for the Second Region title at 7pm at Trigg County’s Wildcat Gym. Henderson County (24-14) beat Madisonville in straight sets 27-25, 25-16, 25-20 to advance to their third straight region title match.
