Colonels Wrestlers Take Fourth at Father Ryan

Christian County had two wrestlers win individual titles to help the Colonels finish fourth at the Father Ryan Johnny Drennan Memorial Wrestling Tournament in Nashville Saturday.

Gage Fowler won the 106-pound class, and Diion Leavell took first place at 182. Fowler won his first three matches with a pin and won an 8-7 decision in the title match.

Leavell also got to wear the team’s pin chain with two in his first two matches. He won first place with an 8-1 decision in the title match.

Austin Gibson took first place in the 113-pound class, and Ethan Wells was fifth at 120. Niko Bussell grabbed sixth place at 195, and Jakerion Merritt (132) and Cameron Coleman (160) both finished in seventh place.

As a team, Christian County finished in fourth place with 158.5 points. Union County won the event with 226 points.

“This team has seen a wide variety of challenging competition. The Father Ryan tournament was the toughest of the (last) four tournaments,” said Colonel wrestling coach Robert Burnham. “It had 40 teams from six different states with individual and team state champions all through the tournament. We brought 10 wrestlers and finished fourth. We keep upping the ante on our wrestlers, and they have yet to yield to pressure.”

Christian County will wrestle again Wednesday at the City/County Championships at Fort Campbell.
