Shane Burns had a hand in both of Caldwell County’s wins Thursday in the Dobyns-Bennett Chop House Classic in Kingsport, TN.

The senior lefty struck out 17 batters in just over six innings to help the Tigers beat Seymour, TN 6-1 in their opener at Hunter Wright Stadium, home of the New York Mets’ Class A team in Kingsport.

Caldwell moved across town to Dobyns-Bennett High and beat Morristown West 6-5 as Burns drove in the go-ahead runs with a single in the sixth inning.

In the opener, Caldwell’s first 15 outs on defense were strikeouts by Burns. He allowed only two hits and two walks with no earned runs.

Dylan Gray doubled home a run in the first inning, and Burns scored a second run on a groundout.

Gabe East had a RBI groundout ahead of a Jase Ryan Felker single to give the Tigers a 4-0 lead after two innings. A Bryce Thomas groundout in the fifth inning plated Gray with Caldwell’s fifth run.

In the seventh, Noah Brown singled and scored on a double by East. Brown and Gray each had two hits for the Tigers, who had seven total in the first game.

In the second game, the Tigers scored the final three runs of the back-and-forth contest as Gray, Bryce Thomas, and Oliver Parker each had two hits, and Bryar Riley added a double. Riley came on in relief of starter Gabe East and pitched three scoreless innings to get the win. He allowed only one hit and struck out five.

Caldwell County (7-2) will play Unicoi County, TN Friday, who lost to Trigg County 3-2 Thursday.
