Knight and Englebright Lead Caldwell Tennis at Region (w/PHOTOS)

The Caldwell County tennis team enjoyed a strong start to the 2nd Region tournament in Henderson on Tuesday.

In girls’ singles play, #1 Belle Englebright won 6-0, 6-0 in her opening match and the quarterfinal to qualify for the state tournament and advance to Tuesday’s semifinal.  Maddie Morgan won 6-0, 6-1 over Union County’s Emily Hibbs, before upsetting 2nd-seeded Marissa Austin (Union County) 6-3, 6-3 to advance to Tuesday’s quarterfinal.

In girls’ doubles, the top-seeded duo of Chasie Phelps and Hana Dixon cruised through the first round and the quarterfinal without dropping a game to move into the semifinal on Tuesday and qualify for state.  Shae Sharp and Kaylee McEnaney were beaten in their opening match by Hopkinsville’s Allie Fort and Ella Lester 6-0, 6-2.

In boys’ singles, 3rd-seeded Ben Knight won 6-0, 6-0 in his opener and the quarterfinal to book his place in the semifinal and qualify for state.  Madux Cummins lost his opening match to Hopkinsville’s Edward Lee Major 6-0, 6-0.

The boys’ doubles team of Shelton Cansler and Michael Henry won their opening match 6-1, 6-0 over Fort Campbell’s Dionte Berry and Takuma Pachnett, before falling to top-seeded Madisonville 6-1, 6-0 in the quarterfinal. Brycen Bannister and Layton Hammett won their first-round match 7-5, 6-1, but lost to UHA 6-2, 6-3.
