Madisonville Powers Way to Sixth Straight District Title

5-25-rennison

Madisonville hit a pair of home runs, and Courtney Patterson kept Caldwell County off the scoreboard in handing the Lady Tigers a 5-0 loss in the championship game of the Seventh District Softball Tournament at Hopkins County Central Thursday. The district title was the sixth straight for the Lady Maroons.

Bailey Woodward broke up a scoreless game in the fourth inning with an RBI double that scored Lindsey Peyton.

Caldwell County appeared to have something going in the fifth inning when J’Aimee Burk singled. Her pinch runner Emily Kirk stole second and advanced to third when Madisonville catcher Mykayla Spurlin’s throw sailed into centerfield. However, the umpires ruled Peyton Young’s bunt attempt interfered with Spurlin’s throw and ruled Kirk was out. Young then followed with a single to right that may have tied the game had Kirk not been called out.

Madisonville took advantage when Spurlin launched a deep home run to left field in the home half of the fifth inning for a 2-0 Lady Maroon lead.

Emma Staples ripped a one-out double for Caldwell County in the sixth and advanced to third but was left stranded.

Madisonville added two insurance runs in the sixth inning when Jayda Perkins homered and Peyton later followed with an RBI double.

Lexi Miller had two of Madisonville’s six hits off Caldwell pitcher Katie Franklin, who struck out 10 and walked just one.

Young had two of Caldwell County’s five hits off Patterson, who struck out nine and walked one in picking up the shutout win.

Both Madisonville (14-8) and Caldwell County (16-11) will advance to next week’s Second Region Softball Tournament to also be held at Hopkins County Central.
