The Trigg County boys’ soccer team scored a goal in each half and held on for a 2-1 victory at Mayfield on Thursday night.  The win is the Wildcats’ fifth-straight and improves their record to 8-1, while the Cardinals slip to 3-6 overall.

Mayfield’s Austin Raiyney opened the scoring 13 minutes in when he got behind the Wildcat defense and beat goalkeeper Matthew Smith.  The lead held until the final seconds of the first half, before Elijah Gaines got on the end of a cross by Daniel Jimenez and headed home at the near post.

In the opening moments of the second half, Gaines took a pass from Clayton Setliff and struck the near post with a shot.  When presented with another opportunity 5 minutes later, Gaines found the back of the net off a deflected shot by midfielder Ben Futrell to give the Wildcats their first lead.

The Wildcats weathered some Cardinal pressure as the game wound down, with Smith making a fingertip save in the final seconds to preserve the win.  Smith made 3 saves, with the Wildcats out-shooting the Cardinals 9-4.

The two teams will change venue and meet again Saturday afternoon at the Recreation Complex in Cadiz.
