A firework show was on display during a chilling rain as the Kentucky Wildcats blew out the 14th ranked Mississippi State Bulldogs at Kroger Field, 28-7.
Both defenses were locked in to start, as each team allowed just seven points in the first half. Kentucky forced four three and outs in the first half, while allowing just one drive to extend more than four plays. While the Cats did give up a touchdown early in the second quarter, running back Benny Snell Jr. answered with a score of his own just before halftime.
Kentucky then came out of the half in shutout fashion, forcing four punts, an interception and a turnover on downs. Meanwhile, the offense was entirely led by the Heisman trophy candidate himself: Benny Snell Jr.
Snell rushed 165 yards on 25 carries for four scores, with his third of the four breaking Randall Cobb’s total touchdown record of 37. The team collectively ran for 229 yards on one of the best front sevens in college football. Snell’s performance is one of many for arguably one of the best careers at Kentucky.
While Snell cemented his voice in the Heisman race, the Wildcats couldn’t have pulled off the victory without Josh Allen & company. The veteran defensive held the Bulldogs to by far their worst offensive showing of the season, compiling 52 tackles (four for a loss), four quarterback hurries, three sacks, six pass breakups and an interception.
The win over for Kentucky will certainly escalate them into the top-25 rankings
The Wildcats will next face the South Carolina Gamecocks, with kickoff set for 7:30 PM EDT next Saturday at Kroger Field.
