UHA’s Wood Qualifies for State Golf Tournament

9-27-wood

Weston Wood walked off the Madisonville Country Club Course Thursday thinking he hadn’t shot a good round of golf. After all, all three golfers who qualified for the state tournament last year on the same course had finished under par. Wood’s score Thursday was a 5-over 76.

However, a chilly and rainy day saw the scores trend higher, and that was good enough for the University Heights Academy junior to qualify for next week’s state golf tournament for the first time. Wood shot a 37 on the front nine and came in at 39 on the back nine which was good for a fourth place tie. He is the first Blazer golfer to appear in the state tournament since Tadd Switzer in 2012.

Owensboro Catholic’s Jakob Wellman shot a 1-over par 72 to win the individual title. Madisonville’s Jackson Hill was two shots back with a 74. Hill, Wood, and Hopkins County Central’s Trae Barber (76) all qualified for the state meet.

Daviess County, last year’s region runner up, took home the region title Thursday with a team score of 320. Owensboro Catholic was second was a score of 338. UHA finished 14th as a team with a score of 414.

Jiles Wyatt started strong with a 36 on the front nine and finished with a 79 after a 43 on the back nine for a ninth place finish. Jude Doer shot a 119, and Kendall Doer shot a 140.

The Leachman Buick-GMC-Cadillac/KHSAA State Golf Tournament will be played Oct. 5-6 at the Bowling Green Country Club with Wood representing UHA.
