After Hopkinsville tied their district championship volleyball match with University Heights Academy at one set apiece, the Lady Blazers showed why they were the number one seed and claimed the final two sets for 3 to 1 (25-18, 22-25, 25-18, 25-11) victory and their third district championship in five years.

The Blazers led 12-10 in the second set before running off four straight points for a 16-10 advantage. After Hoptown got to within 19-17, Katie Beth Stevens and Evelyn Morales combined for three straight kills for a 22-17 lead. UHA closed out the set for a 25-18 win and a 2-1 lead.

The fourth set was close as UHA got out to an 11-9 lead. The set seemed to turn when a UHA spike appeared to land behind the back line, but the back judge ruled it in. Instead of leading by one point, UHA led 12-9 and closed out the set on 13-2 run to claim the set and the match.

Meghan Adams had 16 kills for UHA, while Stevens, Morales, and Aisha Pantiere each had seven kills in the match. Moore had eight of UHA’s 12 aces in the contest.

Karalyn Beymer had 16 kills to lead Hoptown, while Hope Pace added eight kills, four blocks, and three aces. Savannah Peck also contributed 29 assists.

UHA was strong at the net all night. It was Adams who got the Lady Blazers off to the quick start in the first set with three kills and two blocks. Hoptown led 17-16, but two kills by Morales and two aces by Moore sparked a 9-1 run to close out the set for the 25-18 win.

Neither team was separated by more than three points in the second set that featured 10 ties and four lead changes. Beymer had two kills in the decisive 4-1 run to close the set that featured a 92-second volley won by Hoptown on the next to last point.

Both teams will head to next week’s Second Region Tournament at Union County.  UHA’s record is now 23-14, while Hopkinsville sports a record of 9-24. The teams will find out Friday morning who their opponent is at the region draw in Madisonville.
