The good news is that the 2nd Region drew away from the 7th Region in this year’s state volleyball tournament. The “bad” news is that they did not draw very far away.

Over the years, it has seemed like the ping pong balls used to draw out the region pairings had magnets in the ball for the 2nd Region and the 7th Region, matching the 2nd up against the perennial powers of Kentucky high school volleyball in the opening round of the tournament more often than not.

This year’s state tournament pairings were announced Wednesday afternoon, and while the 7th Region is not the opening round opponent for Region 2, it likely will be waiting in the quarterfinal round. The opening round matchup for the Region 2 champion will have the winning team matched up against the winner from Region 14.

The best teams out of Region 14 have been: Letcher County Central (26-3), Leslie County (25-12), Wolfe County (24-9), and Powell County (22-7).

The best teams out of Region 2 this season have been: Caldwell County (23-9), Henderson County (19-11), UHA (23-14), and Crittenden County (25-5).

The 2nd Region tournament will be played next week at Union County High School.
