Wildcat Runners Survive Muddy Course at State Meet

For only the third time in 31 years, Trigg County sent both a boys’ and girls’ team to the state cross country meet in the same year.

Lexi Ricks led the Lady Wildcats with a 77th place finish in a time of 22:16 over the 3.1-mile course. Ricks, making her fifth state tournament appearance, improved both her time (20 seconds) and place (27 places) from last year’s run at the state meet.

Livi Ricks, also making her fifth state meet appearance, finished 111th in a time of 22:51. Grace Hill finished 139th (23:35), followed by DeDe Barbee (185th, 24:52); Phelan Dossett (188th, 25:01); Kylie Alford (190th, 25:09), and Breeanna Barnes (194th, 25:14).

Maggie Schroeder of Highlands won the Class 2A girls’ race in a time of 19:07, becoming the first runner from the school to win a state meet individual title.

As a team, Trigg County finished 27th with 609 points.

Eighth grader Austin Cavanaugh led the boys’ runners with a finish of 116th in a time of 19:06. Apolo Blackbear-Francis, who qualified for last year’s state meet but didn’t run due to sickness, finished 169th in a time of 19:53.

Alex Skinner was 178th in 20:07, followed by seventh grader Riley Thompson (186th, 20:17); Marshall Jenkins (187th, 20:17); Carson Woodall (221st, 21:16); and Tyler Freeman (226th, 21:28).

Warren East’s Colton Bullington won the Class 2A race in a time of 16:20.

Trigg County finished 30th in the team competition, however their average time broke the 20-minute barrier at 19:56.
