Former Hopkinsville Tiger soccer player Ethan Noel and his Centre College teammates are headed for the NCAA Division III soccer tournament this weekend. Centre men’s soccer learned its fate for the upcoming NCAA Tournament Monday afternoon, as the Colonels will head to Gambier, Ohio, to face #23 Carnegie Mellon in the opening round.

It’s the sixth NCAA Tournament appearance in program history and second in the past three seasons, having earned the Southern Athletic Association’s automatic bid in dramatic fashion Sunday at Oglethorpe.

Kenyon (14-1-2) earned hosting rights for the opening rounds November 10-11, and faces Maryville (14-3-1) in the opener. Centre (14-4-2) meets the Tartans (11-4-2) in the other opening round match Saturday, with the winners meeting in round two Sunday.

Saturday will be the first meeting between the two programs.

Centre is 2-5 all-time in the NCAA Tournament, winning matches in 1998 and 2012. The Colonels’ most recent appearance ended in a 3-2 opening-round loss at DePauw in 2016.

Noel has appeared in 13 matches in his freshman season, scoring one goal and coming up with one assist. He played a high of 110 minutes in matches against Oglethorpe and Berry.
