A strong finish for the Logan County Lady Cougars turned out to be the key in their game against the Hopkinsville Lady Tigers Monday night. Logan County eased out from a four point lead at the end of the 3rd quarter to take a 79-72 win on their home court.
Early on in the game, it looked like the Lady Cougars had things going their way. Logan County scorched the nets for 30 points in the first quarter, as the Lady Cougars jumped out to a 30-19 lead.
The Lady Tigers made a big move right before the half to try and get back in the game. Hopkinsville ripped off a 15-4 run late in the half to even the game up at 40-40. The Lady Cougars were able to take a four point lead to the break at 46-42.
The two teams battled out on even terms in the third quarter. With both teams scoring 15 points in the 3rd, Logan County continued to hold a four point lead at 61-57 going into the final quarter.
Despite going only 9 of 18 at the free throw line in the final quarter, Logan County would get the lead back out to nine points with 46 seconds left in the game. The Lady Cougars would then hold on to pick up the seven point victory.
Yogi McKnight topped the scorepage for the Lady Tigers with 21 points, 15 of those coming on five 3-pointers. Breon Oldham had a solid night with 19 points. Jayla Rose was also in double figures with 14.
A huge night for Paige Vanzant, who led all scorers with 34 points for Logan County. Sarah Beth Hale added 17, while Kennedy Nichols scored 12.
Hopkinsville sees a three game winning streak come to an end with the loss, which drops the Lady Tigers to 7-2 on the season. They get back to action Tuesday night when they host Fort Campbell in an 8th District contest.
Logan County improves to 5-2. The Lady Cougars return to action Thursday when they host Metcalfe County.
