Lyons Can’t Escape Early Hole in Loss to East Robertson

The Lyon County Lyons fell behind 14-0 to East Robertson, TN in the Stewart County Christmas Classic on Friday, ultimately falling 64-53 to the Indians.  The loss snaps a 2-game win streak for the Lyons and drops them to 8-6 overall.  East Robertson wins its third-straight to improve to 9-5.

Gabe DeFew scored down low off an assist from Travis Perry for the Lyons’ first points at the 4:30 mark of the first quarter, and they trailed by 12.  A 3-pointer by Daltyn Hammonds followed by a layup by Taylor Groves stretched the Indian’s lead to 25-6 at the end of the quarter.

The Lyons scored the first 4 points of the second quarter, but after a disputed charge call the Lyons’ bench earned a technical, with the Indians knocking down both free throws to restore the 19-point cushion.  East Robertson took its first 20-point lead after a 3-pointer by Jace Hunt with 2:43 left in the half.  Lyon County closed the half with 6 straight points, 4 from DeFew and a layup by Kade Blackburn, to trim the margin to 16.

With 2:32 left in the third the Indians’ lead was again 20 at 50-30.  The teams traded 3-pointers over the final seconds, before a buzzer-beating 3 for East Robertson stretched the margin to 21.

Another Hammonds 3 gave East Robertson its biggest lead at 61-37 just over a minute into the final quarter.  With 4 minutes to play, both teams pulled their starters, and the Lyons closed on an 11-0 run for the final 64-53 score.

DeFew led the Lyons with 20 points, followed by Jackson Shoulders with 11.

For East Robertson, Darion Shannon scored 23, followed by Groves with 17 and Hammonds with 13.

Lyon County will wrap up play at the Stewart County Christmas Classic on Saturday with a matchup with Henry County, TN.
