Caldwell County’s girls used a strong defensive effort to pick up their first district win of the season on Thursday — a 40-19 decision at Dawson Springs.

The Lady Tigers, now 7-6 overall, trailed only briefly at 1-0 before a 3-pointer by Jada Boyd and a basket from in close by Lucy Goffinet put Caldwell in front to stay.

The Lady Tigers led just 9-5 after one quarter, but held the Lady Panthers (5-7 overall, 0-2 7th District) to just two field goals in the second period while extending the margin to 21-9 at halftime. Jacey Jaggers and Peyton Young hit 3-pointers to help Caldwell open up its double-digit lead at the break.

A 13-2 run to open the second half basically put the game away for the Lady Tigers. A layup by Boyd gave Caldwell a 34-11 lead with just 48 seconds left in the third quarter.

Bella McConnell recorded a double-double for the Lady Tigers with 12 points and 19 rebounds. Boyd finished with nine points while Karsyn Parker had 12 rebounds to go with four points.

Goffinet added six points and Jaggers had five for Caldwell.

Erin Orten had six points and 13 rebounds to lead Dawson Springs while Brooklyn Clark also netted six points.

The Lady Tigers will play another 7th District game on Saturday when they visit Hopkins County Central.
