When the shots quit falling for a period of time, it can be awfully hard to win a basketball game any night, much less in a state tournament event. That is exactly what happened to the UHA Lady Blazers Wednesday night against Walton-Verona in the first round of the Girls All A Classic state tournament.

After battling through the first quarter. The Lady Blazers found themselves within five points at 20-15. UHA had played well, getting some big minutes from Meghan Adams, Lily Hendricks, and Alex Juckett.

Then came “the second quarter”, and it was not kind to the Lady Blazers. Walton-Verona opened the second quarter on a 6-0 run to push the lead out to 26-15. Meghan Adams stopped the run with a layup to cut the lead to 26-17 with 4:28 to go in the first half. Then it was like the basket grew a lid at UHA’s end of the court. Add in an injury to Lily Hendricks that sidelined her for a big chunk of the 2nd quarter, and you add all the makings of a serious problem for the Lady Blazer.

Walton-Verona finished the quarter on a 10-0 run to take a 36-17 lead into the locker room, and effectively take UHA out of the game.

The Lady Blazers finished the 2nd quarter 1 of 17 from the field for 5.9-percent. They were 6 of 29 for the first half.

Lily Hendricks returned to the lineup for UHA in the 3rd quarter, but the shooting woes did not completely go away for the Lady Blazers, UHA shot only 4 of 15 in the quarter for 26.7-percent. Hendricks and Adams scored all nine of UHA’s points in the 3rd quarter, as Walton-Verona extended the lead to 54-26.

The final quarter saw both teams get several players into the game as Walton-Verona played it on out to the final 33 point margin.

For the night UHA was 15 of 57 from the field for 26.3-percent, while Walton-Verona finished 30-67 for 44.8-percent.

Alex Juckett was the only Lady Blazer to reach double figures with 11 points. Meghan Adams finished with 9 points and 10 rebounds. Lily Hendricks added 8 points for UHA.

Emma Gutman had 13 for Walton-Verona. Maggie Muerger added 12 points.

UHA falls to 12-7 with the loss. Walton-Verona improves to 16-5 and will advance to Friday’s quarterfinals to take on Bethlehem, who rolled past Bishop Brossart.
