1-29-smith

Lyon County continued their mastery of Trigg County Tuesday with a 40-26 win over the Lady Wildcats that could force a three-way tie atop the Fifth District.

The win was Lyon County’s 26th straight over Trigg dating back to 2009 and third this season.

The Lady Lyons scored the first seven points of the game and jumped out to a 16-2 lead. Lyon County hit six of their first 14 shots and hit the boards to collect 14 first quarter rebounds. Trigg County got into another first quarter hole by missing 11 of their first 12 shots.

Lyon County kept their lead between 11 and 17 points in the second quarter and led 27-10 at halftime.

While the shots didn’t fall for Trigg much in the third quarter, their aggressive play to the basket sent them to the free throw line where they made six and got the deficit down to 10 points as Lyon only made one bucket in the quarter.

Trigg got to within 31-24 with 6:21 left and trailed 34-26 with 4:33 left. On their next two possessions, Trigg had an offensive foul and a turnover and didn’t score the rest of the game, missing four shots and turning the ball over four times.

Allison Murphy led Lyon County with 13 points and three rebounds. Cathryn Brown added 11 points and four rebounds, and Kenttavia Matthews had nine points and nine rebounds.

Rylee Bush led Trigg County with eight points, and Adri Phillips had seven points and six rebounds.

Both Trigg County and Lyon County are 4-2 in district play. If Crittenden County beats Livingston Central Friday, they will join them with identical 4-2 district marks and force a three-way tie for first place. A three-way coin toss will be held Feb. 6 to determine the top three seeds.

Both teams will be in action Thursday. Trigg County (10-14) hosts University Heights, while Lyon County (10-9) hosts Fort Campbell.
