A year after claiming the 13th-District title with a 63-51 victory over Franklin-Simpson, the Todd County Central boys’ basketball team finds itself a 4-seed going into Monday’s tournament in Elkton. Before last season’s championship, the Rebels had last won the title in 2002/03, with a 61-59 overtime victory over Franklin-Simpson. Todd County went the next 14 seasons without a postseason win.
The Rebels, led by senior big man Jon Calvery’s 17.7 points and 12 rebounds a game, managed a single district win during the regular season, a 68-64 victory at Russellville in early December. The Panthers earned a 3-seed, with Jacob Naylor’s 25 points a game leading the charge.
Todd County’s first round opponent, the top-seeded Logan County Cougars, finished their district slate at 5-1, with the lone loss coming at Franklin-Simpson. The Cougars were knocked out in the their tournament opener last season, and last won the 13th-District title in 2014/15.
The second-seeded Franklin-Simpson Wildcats matched Logan County’s district record at 5-1, and closed the regular season at 15-11 overall. DeMarco Chatman led the Wildcats in both scoring and rebounding at 16 points and 6.7 boards a game. Franklin-Simpson fell to Todd County in last season’s title game, after winning the district title in both of the previous two seasons.
Logan County and Todd County kick things off Monday at 7:30, with Russellville and Franklin-Simpson meeting in the second semifinal on Tuesday at 7:30. The championship game is scheduled for Thursday at 7:00 PM.
