Henderson County Returns to the Top of the Region Mountain

Webster County was the defending region champion. Henderson County has won more region titles than any other Second Region team. In the end, the Lady Colonels used their defense to score 24 points off turnovers and beat Webster County 50-36 Tuesday to claim their sixth region title in seven years.

Henderson forced Webster into 16 turnovers and took advantage of the miscues throughout the contest, outscoring the Lady Trojans 24-4 off turnovers. Webster County, who shot 51-percent combined in their first two tourney wins, hit just 29-percent from the field Tuesday.

It was the fourth time the teams played this season. Webster won the previous three by a total of 48 points. But the game stayed close early, with the teams tied 9-9 after one quarter and Henderson leading 24-21 at halftime. There were seven ties and four lead changes in the half.

The Lady Colonels came out of the locker room with the first seven points – five by Emilee Hope – to take a 31-21 lead. Henderson hit 5-of-9 shots in the third quarter and outscored Webster 14-4.

The Lady Trojans struggled to find their shots throughout the game and missed eight shots in the paint and hit just 4-of-21 behind the arc. They did cut the deficit to 43-36 with 2:43 remaining, but Henderson hit 12-of-17 free throws in the fourth quarter to keep Webster at bay.

Hope led Henderson County with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Katie Rideout added 14 points.

Webster County (29-4) was led by freshman Raigan Price’s 17 points. Sadie Wurth added 10 points and four assists. Region Player of the Year Karlie Keeney was held to three made free throws. She did grab 10 rebounds.

Henderson County (18-8) will play 13th Region champion North Laurel (30-6) March 14 in the Girls’ Sweet 16 at Rupp Arena.
