Colonels Get Walk-Off District Win Over Hopkinsville

There were some who said the Christian County/Hopkinsville rivalry had lost some of its luster in recent years, especially with the Colonels owning a seven-game winning streak over the Tigers dating back to 2015.

The shine may be back on following Thursday night’s 1-0 Christian County win. Eric Silvy singled home Austin Fields with the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning to cap an epic pitching duel between Christian County’s Lane Diuguid and Hopkinsville’s Robert Justus.

Both hurlers were in command throughout – they each allowed just three hits, had 12 strikeouts, and issued no walks.

With Justus nearing the pitch limit set by KHSAA rules, he struck out Patrick Croney to begin the eighth inning before Fields reached on an infield error. Freshman Jacob Dilday relieved Justus for the Tigers. Fields stole second, and Silvy took Dilday’s 2-2 pitch into right field to score Fields with the game-winner.

Both pitchers got some key defensive plays behind them to preserve the shutout. In the fourth inning, Christian County right fielder Elijah Underhill threw out Ryan Myers trying to stretch a single into a double.

In the seventh, Elijah Owens reached on a single but was thrown out trying to steal second base by Hoptown catcher Blake Sowell.

The loss was Hopkinsville’s first in five games to start the 2019 season. Christian County improves to 3-2 with the win. The teams will meet again Friday night at Hoptown High.
