Lyon County will play in the state All A Classic baseball tournament for the first time in school history after beating Murray 5-2 Wednesday night in sectional action.
Jackson Shoulders went the distance on the mound for the Lyons, scattering six base hits. Meanwhile, Jake Klueppel and Gabe Board continued their hot hitting, each homering to lead the 2nd Region champion Lyons to the win at 1st Region winner Murray.
Lyon (13-5) extended its winning streak to nine games and used a nine-hit attack to get past the host Tigers (7-7).
Murray used small-ball to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third. Kyle Crady singled with one out. He was bunted to second, then scored when Bradley Dawson singled to center.
But Lyon got a leadoff double from Shoulders in the top of the fourth. Two outs later, Klueppel slammed a two-run home run to left to give the Lyons a 2-1 advantage.
Murray tied things in the bottom of the fourth. A hit batter, an infield single and a sacrifice fly to right by Reese Wilson allowed the Tigers to tie the game at 2-2.
The deciding frame proved to be the top of the sixth for the Lyons.
Board homered on a line drive over the left-field fence to start the inning. Lyon later loaded the bases, and tacked on a pair of insurance runs when Christian O’Daniel’s pop-up on the infield fell in for a single. Another run scored on an error on the play to put Lyon up 5-2.
Murray got the potential tying run to the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning. However, Shoulders struck out the next two batters to end the game and allow Lyon to celebrate a trip to state.
Shoulders struck out five in the contest without issuing a free pass. He needed just 79 pitches in the complete-game effort.
Shoulders and Gunnar Bingham were each 2-for-4 at the plate for the Lyons while Klueppel and Board had the homers.
The Lyons will play in the All A Classic state tournament at Chautauqua Park in Owensboro on Saturday, April 27, at 9 a.m. Lyon will face either Campbellsville or Louisville Holy Cross.
