Washington County senior pitcher Trinity Baker held Lyon County’s high-powered offense relatively in check, and the Commanderettes beat the Lady Lyons 6-2.

That dropped the Lady Lyons to 1-1 in pool play and likely needing a win over powerful Louisville Holy Cross in their final preliminary game to advance to the championship round on Sunday.

Washington (15-4) used a 10-hit attack to deal Lady Lyon (16-8) the setback. The Commanderettes put up single tallies in each of the first three innings, then scored twice in the fifth and one more time in the sixth.

After falling behind 1-0 in the first, Lyon scratched out a run in the bottom of the frame. Sydney Melton doubled to start the inning and later came in to score from third when Calista Collins grounded out to third.

The only multiple-run inning came when Washington’s Emily Middleton drilled a two-run home run to center.

Down 6-1 in the seventh, the Lady Lyons tried to mount a rally. Gracen Wynn singled home a run with two outs to make it 6-2 and put runners on the corners. Lyon needed just one more runner to reach base to get the potential tying run to the plate. However, a ground ball to short ended up being a force out at second on a close play, ending the game.

Middleton finished 3-for-4 at the plate for Washington.

Wynn was 2-for-3 for Lyon while Melton was 2-for-4. Rachel Coursey added a double.
