Unlike athletes who are often recognized on their field or court of play, cheerleaders have to market themselves to potential colleges in order to attract scholarship offers. Hopkinsville High senior Sydni Henagan went the unconventional route, but it paid off as she signed her scholarship papers Wednesday to cheer at Purdue University.

Henagan has competed with the Bluegrass Cheercats All-Star Competitive Cheer Team for 13 years. The Hopkinsville based squad competes across the country and has won national competitions during Henagan’s time on the team. In addition, she has served as a student coach for the Cheercats for three years.

She was able to use her time with the Cheercats in the past two years to attend a recruitment clinic, one of which was attended by 28 Division I schools.

Henagan was a Governors Scholar last summer and received a merit scholarship from Purdue in addition to the athletic scholarship money. She plans on studying history and pre-law at Purdue. Her brother C.J. Henagan signed to play sports at Emory-Riddle University last year.
