When Caldwell County took an 8-0 lead through four innings, it looked like Hopkinsville was about to be on the wrong end of a mercy-rule decision.

However, Hoptown (17-7) rallied for four runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings to tie the game and went on to claim a 14-11 decision in nine innings.

The win spoiled Caldwell’s Senior Day celebration at the VFW Ballpark in Princeton. The game went from looking like it might end early, to lasting almost three-and-a-half hours.

Left-hander Tim Cansler was the star out of the Hopkinsville bullpen. Cansler went 5.1 innings, allowing just one earned run on four hits while striking out seven and walking two after taking over in the fourth inning. Cansler got the win while Layne Jorgensen earned a save by getting the final out with the potential tying run at the plate in the bottom of the ninth.

At the plate, Ryan Myers went 3-for-4 and scored four times for Hoptown. Cansler was 1-for-3 with three RBIs.

Caldwell (14-11), which had a four-game winning streak snapped, was led by Gabe East, who went 4-for-6 at the plate. Oliver Parker was 3-for-5 and drove in two, Easton Thompson went 2-for-5 with three RBIs and Tate VanHooser was 2-for-5 and knocked in two.

Caldwell outhit Hopkinsville 15-10, but Caldwell pitchers issued 10 walks in the contest.

Hoptown took a 9-8 lead in the top of the eighth when Myers walked and later scored on an error.

Caldwell tied things in the bottom of the frame when Cody Holub slammed a solo home run to left-center with one out. That sent the game to the ninth inning.

Cansler had a two-run single as part of a five-run ninth inning for Hopkinsville. That put the visitors up 14-9.

Caldwell scored twice in the bottom of the inning and got the potential tying run to the plate with two outs. But Jorgensen struck out the next hitter to end the contest.
