Caldwell County’s Belle Englebright advancing to the Girls’ Second Region semifinals was no surprise. The two-time defending champion won both of her matches Monday 6-0, 6-0 at Henderson’s Water Street Courts. However, the Caldwell County junior will be joined in the round of four by teammate Kaylee McEnaney, who upset No. 3 seed Kendall Warren of Madisonville 6-3, 6-4.
McEnaney, a sophomore opened with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Fort Campbell’s Anjelle Lopez.
Englebright beat Hopkins County Central’s Liberty Skaggs 6-0, 6-0 in her opener. She also beat Christian County’s Ella Brown 6-0, 6-0, but the match saw Brown take her deeper into points than her opener.
Englebright will play No. 5 seed Marissa Austin of Webster County in Tuesday’s semifinals. McEnaney will play Hopkinsville’s Riley Fort, the No. 2 seed in the tournament.
In doubles play, Chasie Phelps and Maddie Morgan moved into the semifinals with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Henderson County’s Riley Lovell and India Lovan and a 6-2, 6-2 win over Hopkins County Central’s Annalisa Keown and Abigail Mitchell.
They will have to wait and see who their semifinal round opponent is. Hopkinsville’s Skylar Ray and Sophie Maddux will play Madisonville’s Dani Cruz and Riley Marsh in a quarterfinal match Tuesday. They had to win a tiebreaker set over Fort Campbell’s Chandler Burgoyne and Smith after dropping the first set 6-4.
Caldwell’s other doubles team, Shae Sharp and Josie Shaffer, beat Lyon County’s Jakhia Burks and Octavia Bradley 6-3, 6-0 before falling to Henderson County’s Kally Priest and Isabelle Wright 6-0, 6-1 in the quarterfinals.
Caldwell County and Hopkinsville are tied in the points standings with six points each. Madisonville is third with three points.
