Lyons Drop the Hammer on Trigg to Advance to District Championship

5-21-yancy

After two close games with Trigg County during the regular season, Lyon County wanted to jump out to a fast start in their district semifinal game with the Wildcats to ensure there would be no such drama.

The top-seeded Lyons scored in every inning to hand Trigg County an 11-1 loss and advance to the district championship for the first time since 2015.

After Trigg County took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single by Jacob Kent, the Lyons responded with a single by Gunnar Bingham and double by Gabe Board.  Bingham scored on a groundout, and Aidan Rush plated Board with a single.

Bingham added a two-run homer in the second inning, and Travis Yancy led off the third inning with a homer to right field to put the Lyons ahead 6-1.

When Lyon County wasn’t finding gaps, Trigg County was aiding their cause with some shoddy fielding that led to seven unearned runs.  Trigg’s infield defense was responsible for six of their seven errors.

Bingham finished the day with three hits and three RBIs, while Yancy, Rush, and Christian O’Daniel each had two hits for the Lyons.

Trigg managed just three hits off freshman Jackson Shoulders, who struck out six and walked one in picking up the complete game win.

The 10-run loss was Trigg County’s worst in the district tournament in nine years.  They finish their season with a record of 14-15.

Lyon County (23-10) will play Crittenden County for the district title Tuesday.  The Rockets scored four times in the sixth inning to beat Livingston Central 5-3.  Payton Riley doubled as part of a two-hit night for the Rockets and struck out 10 on the mound.
