Lyon County American Legion Post 68 is 8-2 after sweeping a pair of games from Newburgh (Ind.) Kapperman Post 44 Sunday afternoon at Jim Boyd Field at Lee S. Jones Park in Eddyville.

Colin Price’s monster game at the plate helped Lyon pull out an 11-8 victory in the second contest.

Price’s grand slam in the bottom of the eighth inning ended the game. It was his second round-tripper of the tilt, and he finished 3-for-3 at the plate with nine runs batted in.

Newburgh, which had entered the twinbill with a 7-2 mark, forced the extra frame by scoring six times in the top of the seventh inning to knot things at 7-7.

Post 44 went up 8-7 in the top of the eighth before Price’s heroics in the bottom of the frame.

Gabe Board also homered for Lyon County, which outhit Newburgh 10-9.

Board was also the winning pitcher for Post 68. He went the last 1.1 innings in relief of starter Cameron Head.

Head cruised through six innings, allowing just one run, before three Lyon errors in the seventh led to all six of Newburgh’s runs in that inning being unearned. Head struck out six while allowing seven hits in 6.2 innings.

In the opener, Cade Duncan blanked Newburgh through six innings before allowing an unearned run in the seventh during Lyon’s 5-1 triumph. Duncan struck out eight, walked two and surrendered just four base hits in the complete-game effort.

Offensively, Cameron Dean tripled home a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth while Price went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and two RBIs in that game. Davis Corbett and Tristan Mannahan each singled home runs for Post 68. Mannahan’s two-out hit in the bottom of the fourth produced the first run of the contest.

Post 68 has won five straight games. That includes a 7-5 victory at Evansville Pate Post 265 on Friday.

Price was 3-for-4 with an RBI and Board was 2-for-4 at the plate and drove in three runs in that game.

Board was the winning pitcher, again in relief. He tossed two shutout innings, allowing just one hit while fanning two and walking one.

Post 68 will travel to Columbia, Tenn., for action on Thursday and Friday before playing at home again next Sunday afternoon against Evansville Funkhouser Post 8.
