University of Kentucky golfer Cullan Brown will compete in his first PGA Tour event next week in Lexington. The Lyon County alum has received an exemption to participate as an amateur in next week’s Barbasol Championship at Keene Trace Golf Club.

Tournament sponsors are allowed to invite players to their tournament who may not have qualified under certain PGA standards. Those are called exemptions.

Brown was an All-SEC Freshman Team selection after four top-20 finishes in the spring, including a tie for ninth at the SEC Championship.

Brown is in Lexington this weekend to practice at the University of Kentucky golf facility before two practice rounds Monday and Tuesday. He will participate in a pro-am Wednesday before the first round of the Barbasol Championship begins Thursday.

Other players in the field include Kentucky natives Case Cochran, Steve Flesch, and Kenny Perry as well as John Daly.

The last amateur winner on the PGA Tour was Phil Mickelson, then a student at Arizona State University, who won the Northern Telecom Open in 1991.
