Lyon County Post 68 Scores 11 Straight to Win State Tourney Opener

Lyon County Post 68 overcame a 5-0 deficit through four innings to post an 11-5 win over Mayfield Post 26 in the opening game of the American Legion State Tournament Wednesday in Eddyville.

The Post 68 Aces advance to face Owensboro Post 9 in the second round Thursday at noon as the double-elimination tournament continues.

Lyon County, the defending state champion, got back in the game by scoring four times in the bottom of the fifth inning to cut Mayfield’s lead to 5-4. Post 68 then erupted for seven runs in the bottom of the sixth, including a three-run home run to left by Davis Corbett to put the finishing touches on the big inning.

Will Thompson was 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and an RBI for Lyon County while Cade Duncan was also 2-for-3.

Kevin Brooks tossed 2.1 innings of shutout baseball out of the bullpen to finish off the victory and earn the win on the hill for Post 68.

With a win over Owensboro, Lyon County would advance to the winner’s bracket final on Friday.

The championship round is set for Saturday at Jim Boyd Field at Lee S. Jones Park in Eddyville.
