PREVIEW – Lady Rebels To Use Mix of Youth and Experience in 2019 (w/VIDEO)

8-8-flores

Todd County Central will turn to a mix of experience and youth as they continue to build on their recent girls’ soccer success.

After winning the school’s first-ever district title in 2017, the Lady Rebels suffered a double-overtime loss to Franklin-Simpson in the first round last year. The Lady Rebels finished 7-11 but lost six of their final seven games.

Katie Covington (22-31-2) enters her fourth season at the helm of the Lady Rebels and will try and mesh together a talented mix of upper classmen and freshmen.

Gone to graduation are Maddye Drummond, the program’s second all-time leading scorer and career leader in assists, and starting goalie Rachel Bilyeu.

Junior Jenny Flores is a third-year starter who scored five goals last year. She, along with sophomore Itzel Salazar, will return up front for the Lady Rebels, who will look to score more. The Lady Rebels scored fewer than two goals a game last year.

Covington is excited about a large group of freshmen, several of which could make their way into the starting lineup. Madison Henderson has been a leading scorer at the middle school and junior varsity level the past three years. Brianna Thornberry and Lourdes Anastacio will join senior Alexis Andrews on defense. Andrews is the anchor of a Todd County defense that Covington says will be the strength of the team.

Tamiya Foster and Gracie Silvia, who missed the 2018 season with an ACL injury, will also be key parts to the Lady Rebel attack.

Sophomore Samantha Case will move into goal and has been a preseason surprise for Covington.

Todd County Central only has five juniors and seniors combined, which means the young players will see some extended time this year.

Most of the top players in the 13th District return in 2019 which should put the Lady Rebels in the mix to get back to the district championship. The contributions from the younger players will likely determine the success of the Lady Rebels this year.

Todd County Central opens their season Monday at home against Fort Campbell.
