Blake Vivrette puts a shot past the goalkeeper during Caldwell County action last season.

It’s a new era for boys’ soccer at Caldwell County.

The Tanner Reed Era.

Reed, a former Marshall County player and assistant coach, was named the Tigers’ new coach in June.

He faces a rebuilding job at Caldwell, which went just 2-14-1 last season and scored only 20 goals in 17 games.

Much of that offense graduated. However, sophomore Blake “Bob” Vivrette returns after scoring three goals and dishing out two assists last season.

Vivrette and incoming freshman Grayden Miller will be counted on heavily up front.

Lone senior Josh Hagan will likely move out of the net and into a center-back spot while sophomore Andrew Risley takes over the goalkeeping duties.

Sophomore Ethan Weatherspoon scored three goals last year and is a versatile performer who will likely be placed into a center-back position.

Reed will look to build the rest of the lineup out of his 20-player roster, which he said is about 10 players short of what he would like.

One of Reed’s long-term goals is to build depth in the Tiger ranks.

Reed has firsthand knowledge of what a successful program looks like.

A 2011 graduate of Marshall County High School, Reed played college soccer at Mid-Continent and Campbellsville. He has been an assistant coach for the Lady Marshals the past two seasons but started working with the boys’ program there last November.

At Caldwell, Reed takes over for Alan Shaffer, who stepped down following the 2018 season.

Shaffer had been head coach at Caldwell since taking over the program in 2007, replacing Rhett Miller, who is currently the coach of the girls’ soccer team at Caldwell.

The Tigers begin the regular season on Monday, Aug. 12, when they visit Webster County as part of a girls and boys varsity doubleheader.

The first home game for Caldwell’s boys is set for Saturday, Aug. 17, against Murray High School.

In the 7th District, Madisonville-North Hopkins is a heavy favorite, as usual, with Caldwell and Hopkins Central battling it out for the No. 2 spot in the three-team district.
