After finding itself on the wrong end of a couple of close games during the first week of the season, the Christian County boys’ soccer team picked up its first win of the season Monday night at the Stadium of Champions.  Senior midfielder Benito Rubio’s second goal of the game came with just seconds remaining, giving the Colonels a 3-2 victory over visiting Franklin-Simpson (0-2).

The Colonels twice took the lead before the decisive score, with Rubio putting them on top off an assist from Thomas Barrett in the 25th minute.  Franklin-Simpson answered with 10 minutes to go until halftime and the teams were knotted at the break.

Kenton Lancaster found the back of the net off a pass from Yeffrey Macario to restore the Christian County lead midway through the second half, but the Wildcats evened things up with 5 minutes to play.

With a minute remaining and a draw looking likely, Rubio had other ideas.  His goal off an assist from Lancaster with a minute left would put the Colonels in the win column and give first-year head coach Austin Byrum his first victory.

Christian County will return to action on Thursday when Graves County (0-1) makes the trip to Hopkinsville.
