Former Lyon County and Webster County basketball coach Kelly Carwile passed away Sunday a week after suffering an aortic rupture.
Carwile was 178-184 as a head coach at four different schools. He was 54-54 at Webster County from 1998-2002, including a 36-19 mark in the final two seasons.
He then took the head coaching job at Lyon County in 2002 where he coached Ty Rogers, the Second Region’s second all-time leading scorer. Carwile was 32-24 in two seasons, including an upset of Trigg County in the 2004 district championship.
Carwile left Lyon County after the 2004 season to serve as an assistant coach under Allen Hatcher at Graves County. He resurfaced as a head coach at Pike County Central in 2010, amassing a 49-62 record and two district titles.
He was the head boys’ coach at Grayson County for three seasons from 2014-17 where his record was 43-44 which included two district titles.
Carwile was known as a hard-working, intelligent coach known for his ability to slow down teams defensively yet push the tempo if needed.
He was hospitalized Aug. 25 after suffering an aortic rupture while driving. Carwile had served as a boys’ assistant coach the past two seasons at Hopkinsville and was set to join Jon Newton’s coaching staff at Webster County this fall.
