The Hopkinsville boys soccer team wrapped up play in this weekend’s Boots and Butts Soccer Classic with a 3-0 loss to Campbell County on Sunday.  The Tigers finish fourth in the competition while suffering their first back-to-back shutout losses since 2013.  They now stand at 6-4 overall with a big 8th-District meeting with UHA coming up on Tuesday.

The Tigers, playing without the injured Welby Horn, found themselves behind only :30 into the match when Campbell County’s Trey Penrod got behind the Hoptown defense and scored from close range.

The Camels doubled their advantage midway through the first half, with Penrod providing the assist for a Sam Jones header and a 2-0 score.  The Tigers had a chance to get back in the game with a penalty kick with 2:00 until the break, but Zach Bryant’s shot went wide.

Hopkinsville couldn’t capitalize on a number of scoring chances in the first half and they continued to apply pressure after the break, but it would be Campbell County that found the back of the net when Elliott Warner punched in a loose ball with just five minutes played in the second half.

Neither team would score again, with the Tigers continually denied by a resilient Camel defense and some stellar play by goalkeeper Trent Sorgenfrei.
