After having their struggles over recent years, it appears the Henderson County Colonels might just be for real in 2019. The Hopkinsville Tiger offense was limited to just 13 points Friday night as the Henderson County Colonels kept their record perfect on the season with a 28-13 win over the Tigers in Henderson.
The two teams fought through a scoreless battle for much of the first quarter. The Colonels finally broke through with just 13 seconds left in the first quarter when Layton Fletcher scored from one yard out to take a 7-0 lead.
It did not take Hoptown long to respond. On the final play of the opening quarter, Jay Bland struck for a 44-yard touchdown pass to Reece Jesse to tie the game up at 7-7.
The score remained that way until 1:31 to go in the half, when Fletcher struck again for Henderson County. This time from eight yards out to put the Colonels up 14-7, which would be the score at the break.
Hopkinsville had trouble getting a ground game going in the first half, as the Tigers were limited to 11 yards rushing. For the half, they were outgained 183-123.
The Colonels took control of the game in third quarter when Sam Elliot threw an 80 yard touchdown pass to Edmund Brooks. The score gave Henderson a 21-7 lead midway through the 3rd quarter. Moments later, Henderson County struck again when Elliot connected with Isaiah Fallen for a 20 yard score to push the lead out to 28-7 with just over five minutes left in the third.
Late in the 3rd, Jay Bland took it in from one yard out to cut the lead to 28-13 heading into the final quarter.
That would be as close as the Tigers would get however. Three times in the final quarter, Hopkinsville was stopped on downs as Henderson County held on for the win.
Hopkinsville drops to 2-2 on the season, while Henderson County goes to 4-0.
