Minutes after finding out coach Matt Harper had resigned as Trigg County girls’ soccer coach, the Lady Wildcats dropped a 3-0 match Monday to St. Mary at the Complex.

Harper’s decision to resign was official Sunday. Trigg County did not have school Monday, and the players reported the game only to find out Harper had stepped down, saying “he did what he felt was best for the program.”

Several players were visibly upset both before and at halftime of the contest. Assistant coach Sean Miller has been elevated to head coach, and he will be assisted by Matt Wilder.

The Lady Wildcats ran several shifts onto the field throughout the game with every player eligible to play seeing game time in both halves. St. Mary outshot Trigg County 20-2 in the contest with the Lady Wildcats managing one shot each half.

Jaclyn Meredith scored two goals for St. Mary (3-8), who snapped a four-game losing streak. Ellie Roof scored St. Mary’s third goal on a penalty kick with 10 minutes left.

Trigg County goalie Kenzie Young had ten saves in the contest, including a first half penalty shot. St. Mary converted one of three penalty kicks in the contest.

The Lady Wildcats (5-6) have little time to regroup. They return to action Tuesday at Crittenden County.
