Atkins Claims a Top 5 Finish at Marshall County

Hopkinsville’s Chase Atkins got a preview of the region cross country course and brought home a top five finish Saturday at the Marshall County Invitational.

Atkins finished fourth in a loaded field, crossing the finish line in a time of 16:44. Two runners he will see at the Class 3A Region 1 Meet finished ahead of him. 2018 Class 3A runner-up Jonah Mitchell of Muhlenberg County won the race in 16:25, while Madisonville’s Jackson Watts finished a second ahead of Atkins in third place in 16:43.

Hoptown freshman Chance Jones finished 86th in a time of 20:11. He was followed across the finish line by Zachary Gugle (131st, 21:12); Jonathan Quincey (146th, 21:52); Michael Combs (204th, 24:49); and Jerel Lee (229th, 29:20).

As a team, Hopkinsville finished 15th out of 22 teams with 432 points. West Plains, Mo. won the team title with 52 points. Daviess County (82) was second, and Marshall County (108) was third.
