Trigg County High School inducted its ninth athletic Hall of Fame class Saturday.  One of the inductees was Tommy Johnson.

Johnson was one of the first Trigg County track and field athletes to enjoy success at the region level. His specialty was the one-mile run. He finished second at the WKC Meet and second at the regional meet in the mile as a junior.

Johnson was the first Trigg runner to win the event at the 1964 Western Kentucky Conference Meet, which brought together schools in all classes and sizes. Johnson ran the mile in 4:39.1 and won the race.

He also won the Class 1A region title that same year after completing the mile in 4:42 and qualifying for the state meet at the University of Kentucky.

Track and field at Trigg County would gradually enjoy success in the 1960s and into the 1970s where the program became a household name statewide. However, the initial success of the program can be traced back to Johnson’s runs in 1964.
