Mitchell, Caldwell Down Hoptown 3-0 in Regional Tournament

Caldwell County got 19 kills, two blocks and 12 digs from 2nd Region Player of the Year Olivia Mitchell while beating Hopkinsville in the opening round of the 2nd Region tournament.

Abby Griggs returned to the lineup after being out with an illness and recorded eight kills and a block in Caldwell’s straight-set 25-16, 25-16, 25-21 victory Monday in Madisonville.

Caldwell ran its winning streak against Hoptown to 21 straight with the triumph.

Caldwell, now 22-13, next faces four-time defending regional Henderson County in the semifinals at 5:30 on Wednesday.

Henderson (21-12) advanced by routing Livingston Central 25-10, 25-7, 25-11.

Hopkinsville (12-16) gave Caldwell fits at times with its tips at the net before Caldwell was able to finish off the win.

Savanna Tays recorded 22 set assists, a kill and five digs for Caldwell.

Kendyll Prowell had 13 set assists, three kills, two digs and two aces.

Caldwell also got two kills, four digs and two aces from Mary Tays while Savannah Scott added two kills and two blocks.

Adi Sullenger recorded a team-high 13 digs while Addi Perkins had four digs and Riley Thomas added three times.

The first round of the 2nd Region tournament continues Tuesday, with Crittenden County facing Webster County at 5:30, followed by University Heights Academy and Madisonville-North Hopkins.
