Van Hooser, Bethel Bow in Conference Semifinals

The college volleyball season came to an end for former Caldwell County standout Katie Van Hooser and Bethel University on Saturday.

The Lady Wildcats fell to William Carey in the semifinals of the Southern States Athletic Conference Volleyball Championships in Montgomery, Ala.

No. 4 seed William Carey upended No.2-seeded Bethel 25-19, 25-23, 25-20.

Van Hooser, a junior, had 17 assists and five digs in the setback.

Bethel won its pool, going 2-1, to advance to the semifinal round.

The Lady Cats beat Florida College 3-2 on Thursday.

After falling behind two sets to none, Bethel rallied winning the last three sets. Bethel won 23-25, 24-26, 25-20, 25-21, 15-8.

Van Hooser had 32 assists and 19 digs in that match.

On Friday, Bethel won its opener, defeating Faulkner University 25-14,14-25,25-18,25-18.

Van Hooser recorded 29 assists and eight digs.

With the top seed in its pool already secured, Bethel dropped its next match to the University of Mobile 25-22,11-25,9-25,13-25.

Van Hooser had nine assists and six digs in that match.

Bethel finishes the year with a 22-13 record.

Top-seeded Martin Methodist (Tenn.) defeated William Carey 3-2 (25-18, 22-25, 25-17, 23-25, 15-9) to win the 2019 SSAC Volleyball Championship Saturday afternoon.

The RedHawks already received a bid to the NAIA Volleyball National Championship Opening Round by winning the SSAC Regular Season Championship, so William Carey claims the league’s second bid to nationals as the tournament runner-up.
