Webster County has appeared in the girls’ region championship game each of the last five seasons but only has one title to show for it. Brock Stone takes over a Lady Trojan team intent on making it back for a sixth straight year.

Stone was a boys’  assistant coach at Henderson County and replaced Brandon Fisher who took the Graves County job after three seasons and 78 wins in Dixon.

“Adjusting to the new job has been easier than I thought it would,” Stone said. “That’s a credit to the girls. They come in everyday ready to work. I don’t have to coach effort or attitude.”

In addition to losing All-Region performer Karlie Keeney (18.4 ppg.), Webster lost guard Sadie Wurth (5.8 ppg.) who transferred to Henderson County.

Senior guard Marissa Austin, who scored 14.8 points a game last year and knocked down 57 three-pointers, is back to run the Lady Trojan offense. She has committed to play at Oakland City College.

Sophomore Raigan Price (11.6 ppg, 5.4 reb.) and junior Adeline McDyer (3.5 ppg.) will be two players Stone looks to early in the season as the Lady Trojans will try and build some depth early.

Junior Mariah Austin, who averaged 4.4 points a game, will miss the first two months of the season while recovering from a leg injury suffered during soccer season.

Stone said 5-8 senior Dezeray Browder could be a key contributor on the inside this year.

“The key to our team this year will be how fast we can get some of our young girls ready to play. We are going have to play 3 to 4 freshman or sophomores that haven’t really played much varsity basketball,” Stone said. “If we can get them ready to play along with are core group, then I think it could be a good year.”

Stone feels like defense leading to a transition offense will aid in the Lady Trojans playing a more up-tempo style this year.

“My preseason message to the team was about being a connected team and playing fearless on offense and defense,” Stone said. “We think if we buy into that, then we can be a really good team come March, and that’s the goal.”
